A Daredevil Move

Jupe’s friends found him sitting beside the trail when they returned half an hour later. “You missed a swell hike,” said Pete.

Bob frowned. “Something’s happened,” he said. “You look… you look weird.”

“I never dreamed he’d come after us with a gun,” said Jupe. He shook his head. “It was a shock. And Mr. Peck, we all owe you an apology.”

“You do?” said Ben Peck. “Why?”

“Snabel was here,” said Jupiter, “and he had a gun. Until now, I’ve had doubts about your suspicions. But you were right. He is trailing us, and if he can he’ll do us real harm.”

Jupe then told them about seeing Snabel on the trail.

Ben Peck chuckled at the end of Jupe’s story. “Well, that woman does like to take up with strangers, doesn’t she. Snabel’s about as strange as they come; he should keep her occupied for a while.”

Pete glared at his grandfather. Mr. Peck was absolutely rosy with cheer.

“Grandpa, it isn’t funny,” said Pete. “We could all have been shot. Now that we know, maybe we ought to call the cops, or the sheriff, or whoever you call around here.”

Mr. Peck shook his head. “You remember that officer at the motel fire, when I told him about Snabel? He thought I was crazy. You said it then, and it’s true: Whatever happens, we’re on our own. Now let’s not stand here fussing about it. Let’s get on with our trip!”

He took a deep breath, as if savoring the wilderness for the first time. “I think I’m relieved,” he said. “Now we’re sure. You know, I was beginning to wonder myself if maybe I wasn’t getting kind of senile.”

Jupiter and Pete exchanged a surprised look. Mr. Peck tramped on down to the car and the boys followed him. They drove back to Rapid City in the twilight and checked into a motel. After a hamburger dinner at the nearest fast-food place, Mr. Peck went to bed and snored triumphantly.
